Review of Little Monsters by Kara Thomas
Kacey is the new girl in Broken Falls. When she moved in with her father, she stepped into a brand-new life. A life with a stepbrother, a stepmother, and strangest of all, an adoring younger half sister.
Kacey's new life is eerily charming compared with the wild highs and lows of the old one she lived with her volatile mother. And everyone is so nice in Broken Falls--she's even been welcomed into a tight new circle of friends.
Which is why it's so odd when her closest friends, Bailey and Jade, start acting distant. And when they don't invite her to the biggest party of the year, it doesn't exactly feel like an accident.
But Kacey will never be able to ask, because Bailey never makes it home from that party. Suddenly, Broken Falls doesn't seem so welcoming after all--especially once everyone starts looking to the new girl for answers.
Hello, my fellow book lovers! Today, I will be reviewing the book Little Monsters, by Kara Thomas!
TONE
The tone in Little Monsters is wonderful in ways that I can't fully describe. It's told in first person, mostly from the point-of-view of Kasey, the main character, but with several journal entries from Bailey, the girl who went missing. In the beginning, the tone is very down-to-earth, as you would expect from a mature teenage girl's narration. However, as time goes on and the stakes get higher, the tone becomes much more frantic and, at times, filled with horror. The pages from Bailey's journal are especially filled with personality.
CHARACTERS
One of my favorite things about the characters in Little Monsters is how they develop over time! One of the biggest mistakes a book can make is having static characters that never change. However, Thomas does a wonderful job of avoiding that flaw. Kacey, the main character, is always evolving along with the story. Another wonderful technique Thomas uses with her characters is showing them from two different viewpoints, so you can see different sides of them. This really helps the reader understand even more about the story.
PLOT
Little Monsters has a plot that is disturbing in all the best ways. From beginning to middle to end, I found myself unable to put it down. There were plenty of twists and turns that took me off guard, but made sense in hindsight. The ending was especially satisfying, as Thomas made all of her foreshadowing come together perfectly when she finally let us see the solution to the mystery she'd presented us with.
ENDING REMARKS
Little Monsters has quickly become one of my favorite books! It's a wonderful psychological novel, with intricate mysteries that are guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat!
