Review of 'Renegades' by Marissa Meyer

The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies―humans with extraordinary abilities―who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone...except the villains they once overthrew.
Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice―and in Nova. But Nova's allegiance is to the villains who have the power to end them both.

Hello, my fellow book lovers! Today, I will be reviewing the book Renegades by Marissa Meyer!

TONE

In Renegades, Meyer's tone is spot on! She is perfect at fleshing out the mood of the story, and updating her tone to match. When she is focusing on Nova, the mood of the book feels bitter, sarcastic, and, near the ending, conflicted. However, when Meyer focuses on Adrian, the tone is much more hopeful and gentle. These changes help flesh out the characters, and also really keeps the reader invested!

CHARACTERS

One of the most important things to me when I read a book is how realistic and relatable the characters' personalities are, and I find that Meyer does a beautiful job with this. Nova, one of the main characters, is a part of the Anarchists, a criminal orginisation determined to bring down the Renegades, which is the superhero orginisation. Nova is especially loyal to the cause, as she blames the Renegades for the death of her family. Her personality is sarcastic and cynical, but she is shown to be compassionate at times. On the other hand, Adrian is the son of two of the leaders of the Renegades, and is considered to be a picture-perfect hero. He is kind, caring, and outgoing. On further inspection, though, he is not without flaws of his own. For example, he can be ignorant, as well as reckless. Even the minor characters are fleshed out well, each with a unique and realistic personality!

PLOT

The plot of Renegades is excellent. It's easy to follow, while still being incredibly compelling! I found myself on the edge of my seat more often than not, and thourogly enjoyed trying to predict what would happen next. One of my favorite things about the story was how it made me consider my morals. It posed questions such as 'Do villians deserve second chances?' and 'What even makes someone a 'villian' to begin with? Moreover, what makes someone a hero?', as well as more questions about the nature of good and evil. It was refreshing to see these questions approached from both Nova and Adrian's different, often conflicting viewpoints.

ENDING REMARKS

All in all, Renegades gets a glowing review from me! Every aspect of it was wonderful, and resulted in an excellent read from start to finish!
